KANHA NATIONAL PARK
Nestled in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park lies along the northern slopes of Maikal hills in the eastern Satpura range of Central Indian Highlands. Globally renowned for its rich biodiversity, thriving wildlife and tiger population, it is one of India’s first designated tiger reserves under Project Tiger. This picturesque landscape of Sal and bamboo forests, enchanting meadows, plateaus, meandering streams, lakes and waterholes, create one of the most scenic safari destinations of India.
KANHA HISTORY
The conservation journey of Kanha began in 1879, when it was declared as a Reserve forest under the British administration. This initiative marked the earliest steps towards protecting the Sal forest of this region. In 1933 this area was notified as a Wildlife Sanctuary, and later established as a National Park in the year 1955. The defining moment came in 1973-74 when Kanha was designated as one of the first tiger reserves under Project Tiger – India’s flagship tiger conservation initiative launched to increase tiger conservation efforts.
Kanha’s successful revival of the rare hard-ground barasingha or swamp deer, stands one of the greatest wildlife recovery stories from India.
